How to Tie a Half Windsor Knot in 9 Easy Steps

There are a handful of skills that separate a well-dressed man from everyone else. Tying a proper Half Windsor knot is one of them.

It's not the most complicated knot, that's partly the point. The Half Windsor is symmetrical, medium-sized, and works across almost every occasion and collar type. Once you know how to tie it, you'll reach for it constantly.

Here's how to get it right.

What Is a Half Windsor Knot?

The Half Windsor is a classic tie knot that produces a triangular, symmetrical shape. Slightly smaller than the Full Windsor, but with the same clean, polished finish. It uses less fabric than the Full Windsor, which makes it a better option for thicker ties and wider lapels where a Full Windsor might overwhelm the collar.

Despite the name, the Half Windsor isn't simply half of a Full Windsor. It's its own knot with a different sequence of steps and a slightly different drape.

When to Wear a Half Windsor Knot

The short answer: almost always.

The Half Windsor is versatile enough for job interviews, office wear, weddings, and formal events. It works with spread collars and semi-spread collars particularly well. The medium knot size fills the collar spread without overpowering it.

For very narrow point collars, a Four-in-Hand knot is a better fit. For very wide spread collars on a formal occasion, consider the Full Windsor.

In terms of tie fabric, the Half Windsor works well with most weights. Wool, silk, and polyester blends all produce a clean result.

How to Tie a Half Windsor Knot: Step by Step

Step 1: Drape the tie around your collar with the wide end on your right and the narrow end on your left. The wide end should hang about 30cm lower than the narrow end. The exact amount will vary depending on your height and the tie's length.

Step 2: Cross the wide end over the narrow end from right to left.

Step 3: Bring the wide end up through the loop around your neck from underneath, pulling it upward and toward you.

Step 4: Bring the wide end back down to the right.

Step 5: Cross the wide end horizontally across the front of the knot from right to left. This creates the horizontal band that will be visible at the front of the finished knot.

Step 6: Bring the wide end up through the neck loop again from underneath.

Step 7: Bring the wide end down through the horizontal band you created in Step 5, threading it through from front to back.

Step 8: Hold the narrow end and slide the knot up toward your collar, tightening it gradually. The knot should sit snugly at the collar - not too tight, not too loose.

Step 9: Adjust the dimple. Pinch the tie just below the knot and push up gently to create a single centred dimple. This is the finishing detail that separates a well-tied knot from a flat one.

Pro tip: The tip of the wide end should reach your trouser waistband - not above it, not significantly below it. If it's too short or too long, adjust your starting position in Step 1.

The Half Windsor is the more versatile of the two. It works across more occasions, more collar types, and more tie fabrics. The Full Windsor is better suited to very formal occasions where a larger, more commanding knot is appropriate.

If you're building a repertoire of knots, the Half Windsor is the one to learn first.
